1. What is VoIP and what does it stand for?

The signal is then sent through your cable modem to your local telephone carrier.

3. What equipment do I need for VoIP phone calls?

Your existing incoming high-speed Internet connection should be sufficient but the higher the connectivity the better the signal.
In terms of hardware, you can hook up an inexpensive microphone to your computer or connect a phone directly to a VoIP telephone adaptor (ATA). Or you can use a phone specially made to work with Internet Voice. This is called an SIP phone. Each SIP phone is a network endpoint, and voice is routed via its IP address. It allows a DID (direct inward dialing) number to move with a user. You can move, add or remove stations and never have to call your interconnect/PBX service company. SIP phones also allow full use of advanced features like voice mail to e-mail and auto attendant.

4. Are there any differences between making a local call or a long distance call?

There are many different calling available for VoIP. The calling rates and fixed plans will vary from one vendor to another depending on the service you select. Please make sure to read all of the fine print associated with any plan that you choose.
One thing to keep in mind, however, is that VoIP can blur the difference between local and long distance by issuing a local number for your Internet phone. This allows you to make LOCAL calls to your home area code from that phone, regardless of where you are geographically. All you need is an Internet connection to plug in your phone, it doesn't matter what Internet provider you use, and you can call your local area code from anywhere in the world without paying long distance rates.

5. Who can I call if I am using a VoIP service?

Your calls can be made to any local telephone number, mobile phone, long distance number, or any international number. You may even use the service to speak with more than one person at a time. Here's how to get it back:

Click Start -> Run -> type "gpedit.msc"

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab.

By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.

So the trick is to ENABLE the reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Okay, Yahoo! is known for its high-quality and well-organized Web directory.
But when you use Yahoo!’s Web Search feature, you bypass the directory
entirely and instead retrieve results supplied by a third-party search engine.
That’s right. When you use the search box on Yahoo!’s home page, you’re not
searching Yahoo!—you’re searching Google.
For some time now, Yahoo! has supplemented its directory listings with results
from a partner search engine. Early on, Yahoo! offered results from the Inktomi
search engine. Today, Yahoo! uses results provided by Google.
The contract that Yahoo! has with Google is not open-ended, which means
that when the current contract expires, it’s possible that Yahoo! might go
with a different search index provider—such as Inktomi, which Yahoo! purchased

Search—but Fewer of Them
Yahoo! was created as a hand-picked directory of Web sites. Over the past
decade, however, the Yahoo! directory has become a less and less important
part of the Yahoo! pantheon of services—to the point where many users don’t
even know the directory exists. After all, if you use the search box on the
Yahoo! home page—which Yahoo! obviously wants you to do—you pass over
the directory entirely.
That’s too bad, because the Yahoo! directory is actually a pretty good assemblage
of what’s out there on the Web. It’s also arguably the easiest search site
for Web surfers to use.
It all boils down to the basic difference between a directory and a search index.
You see, there are two approaches to organizing all the information on the
World Wide Web. One approach is to use a special type of software program
(called a spider or crawler) to roam the Web automatically, feeding what it finds
back to a massive bank of computers. These computers hold indices of the
Web—in some cases, entire Web pages are indexed; in other cases, only the
titles and important words on a page are indexed. This approach is the one
taken by the big search engines, such as Google, AltaVista, and HotBot—and
by Yahoo!’s Web Search feature (which is actually supplied by Google, as you’ll
learn in Secret #3).
The other approach—the one taken by the Yahoo! directory—is to have actual
human beings physically look at each Web page and stick each one into a
hand-picked category. After you get enough Web pages collected, you have
something called a directory.
Unlike a search engine, a directory doesn’t search the entire Web—in fact, a
directory catalogs only a very small part of the Web. But a directory is very
organized, and very easy to use, and lots and lots of people use Web directories
(such as Yahoo!) every day.
Of course, that’s not to say that the Yahoo! directory is perfect. Far from it. For
starters, it’s small—only 2 million pages, versus 3 billion or so in Yahoo!’s Googlesupplied
Web Search index. (That means that Yahoo!’s directory content represents
less than 1/10 of 1 percent of the total number of pages currently published on
the Web—not very comprehensive at all.)
Fortunately, you don’t have to limit yourself to the listings in the Yahoo! directory;
Yahoo! supplements its directory listings with search results from a thirdparty
search engine. Read on to learn another little secret about Yahoo!’s search
capabilities.

If you want universal access to your contacts, no matter where you are (or what
PC you’re using), use Yahoo! Address Book (address.yahoo.com). Yahoo!
Address Book stores your contact information on Yahoo!’s Web servers so that
you can access the information from any PC with an Internet connection and a
Web browser.

All your contacts are listed—sorted by last name—on the Yahoo! Address Book
page. If you have a number of contacts, you can search for a specific name, display
names by the first letter of the last name, re-sort the contacts by first name,
company, or e-mail address, or pull down the View Category list to display only
those contacts assigned to a specific category. Yahoo! displays icons next to
each name indicating whether that person is online or offline at the moment.
To add a contact to your address book, click the Add Contact button. When the
Add Contact page appears, enter as much information as possible for your new
contact. You can add even more details by clicking the Add More Details button;
click the Save button to add this new contact to your Yahoo! Address Book.

shown in Figure 1-17. When you click the Friends tab, all the members of your

Let’s start with group communications, which you do with Yahoo! Chat (chat
.yahoo.com). Once you load the Yahoo! Chat software, you enter a topic-specific
chat room where you join other users in a group conversation. You send messages
to the room using your keyboard and read everyone else’s messages on
your computer screen. You can even send private messages to other users in a
chat room, so you can keep your personal conversations out of the public eye.
The Yahoo! Chat page is your home page for all of Yahoo!’s chat activities. From
here you can access featured chat rooms and chat events, or browse through
the available chat rooms, organized by category.

When you enter a chat room, you see the screen shown in Figure 1-16. All messages
are displayed in the Chat pane; everyone chatting in the room is listed in
the Chatters pane. You enter your messages in the Send box and then click the
Send button (or press Enter) to send the message to the room. After you send a
message, it appears in the Chat pane, listed in-line with all the other messages.

If you want your messages to stand out amidst the visual cacophony of a
busy chat room, consider changing the color or style of your text. To change
the color of your messages, select a different color from the Color list. To
change the style of your message text, click the B (bold), I (italic), or U
(underline) buttons.

Everybody else in your chat room is listed in the Chatters list. If you want to
change chat rooms, click the Change Room button. When you click this button,
Yahoo! displays the chat room list; click a room name to change to that room.
If you have a microphone and speakers connected to your PC system, you
can participate in Yahoo! Voice Chat, an audio version of normal Yahoo!
Chat. To use Yahoo! Voice Chat, all you have to do is click the Voice Chat
link on the Yahoo! Chat page, and then log into one of the Voice Chat
rooms. From the Voice Chat screen, click and hold the Talk button, then
speak into your microphone. The name of whichever user is currently talking
is displayed in the box next to the Talk button.

Create Your Own Favorites Lists and Guides

Amazon offers two other ways to recommend products to other users—lists and
guides. A list is just that, a list of items you like. A guide is a little more
involved; it’s like a short tutorial on how to do something or other, containing
your specific product recommendations. Read on to learn more about both.
Listmania Lists
Are you a lists freak? Do you constantly organize your life into top ten lists? Can
you quickly name your favorite albums—or books, or movies?
If you’re into lists, then Amazon provides the perfect forum for your obsession.
(Excuse me—your interests.) You can create Listmania Lists about any topic you
can think of; Amazon displays these lists alongside products that are included
in the list. So, for example, if you create a list of your top ten Westerns and
include the film The Magnificent Seven, your list might be displayed on the
product page for The Magnificent Seven DVD.
To create a Listmania List, go to Your Store ? Friends & Favorites and then click
the Add a Listmania List link. Give your list a name, enter your qualifications (if
any—”fan” is as good as any), and then select up to 25 products. Amazon will
create the list, automatically inserting links to pictures of the products you
selected. Once your list is completed, it will be listed on your About You page.

So You’d Like To. . . Guides

Similar are Amazon’s guides, which are short tutorials to various subjects, also
written by Amazon users. If you fancy yourself an expert on a given topic, you
can create your own guide to the topic, which is then listed on product pages for
those products listed within the guide. For example, if you wrote a guide about
how to use Amazon and mentioned this book, your guide would be listed on
this book’s product page.
To create a guide, go to Your Store ? Friends & Favorites and then click the
Write a So You’d Like to... Guide link. Enter a title for your guide and then start
writing. Each guide has to mention at least three products; you link to these
products from within the guide by using the following code: ,
replacing number with the product’s ASIN code. Once your guide is completed,
it will be listed on your About You page.

Create an Online Wish List or Gift Registry
Here’s a cool feature: if a big birthday or holiday is coming up, Amazon lets you
create a Wish List of items you want. Your friends and family can then browse
your Wish List and order any item directly. It’s a great way to ensure you’ll get
at least some of what you really want—and it takes the guesswork out of them
shopping for you, as well.
You create your Wish List one item at a time. Just open any product listing page
and click the Add to My Wish List button. To edit your Wish List and send the
list to potential gift-givers (via e-mail), click the Wish List link at the top of any
Amazon page. You can return to your Wish List at any time to see what items
have been purchased for you or to update the list manually.
Along the same lines, Amazon offers Baby Registries (in conjunction with
Babies R Us) and Wedding Registries. Find out more by going to Your Store ?
Friends & Favorites and then clicking either the Baby Registry or Wedding
Registry link.

Create a Personal About You Page

If you want people to know a little more about you, Amazon lets you create your
own personal About You Web page on the Amazon site. You can use this page
to display a short bio, picture, and your Wish List. When you create an Amazon
list, guide, or Wish List Amazon will include a link to your About You page.
To create an About You page, like the one in Figure 17-8, select the Your Store
tab in the Amazon navigation bar and then click the Your About You Area link.
When the next page appears, click Edit About You to add or change your personal
information. Click the appropriate links in the About You section (at the
top of the page) to add or edit the information on your page.

E-Mail Alerts
Amazon also will let you know when new products you’re looking for are
released. Go to www.amazon.com/alerts/ and enter information about what
products you want to track. Amazon will send you an e-mail alert when new

Sell Your Own Stuff on Amazon

If you actually have products to sell, Amazon will help you sell them. That’s
right, you can tap into Amazon’s established marketing and sales infrastructure
to offer your merchandise to Amazon’s millions of customers—and even let
Amazon handle all the checkout and payment operations.

Amazon Marketplace
If you have something to sell—even if it’s just a used book or CD—the Amazon
Marketplace is the place to be. The Marketplace lets individuals and small
businesses sell all manner of new and used items; it’s particularly well-suited to

selling used books, CDs, videotapes, and DVDs, although you’re not limited to
just these items.
Marketplace items are listed in the Marketplace store and also as options on
normal product listing pages in the More Buying Choices section. Customers
place their orders with and pay Amazon, and then Amazon informs you of the
sale and transfers payment (less their fees and plus a reimbursement for shipping
costs) to you. You ship the item to the customer.
You pay 99 cents to list an item in the Marketplace and then pay Amazon a percentage
of the final selling price. (You pay a 6 percent fee for computers, 8 percent
for electronics and cameras, and 15 percent for all other items.) Each listing
lasts for 60 days.

Pro-Merchants

If you’re a high-volume Marketplace seller, you can sign up for a Pro-Merchant
subscription. For a $39.99 per month fee, Amazon waives the normal 99-cent

the final selling price. Pro-Merchant listings don’t expire.

zShops

If you’re a Pro-Merchant and you’d like to have your own online storefront, sign
up for Amazon’s zShops service. zShops let you sell merchandise outside the
normal Amazon listing pages and can be customized with your own business

Amazon Auctions

A final selling option is Amazon Auctions. I haven’t talked much about Amazon
Auctions, because it’s a weak competitor to eBay (discussed in Chapter 16).
That said, Amazon Auctions has a slightly lower fee structure than eBay; you
pay a flat 10-cent listing fee for each item and a maximum 5 percent final value
fee. (The final value fee is lower on higher-priced items—and if you have a Pro-
Merchant account, you don’t have to pay the listing fee.)

CHAT with Other Amazon Users

Amazon has definitely become a community of users. There’s no better sign of
this than Amazon’s chat rooms and discussion boards, where you can trade
opinions and advice with other Amazon users.
Chat
Amazon lets you chat in real-time with other users via its numerous categoryspecific
chat rooms. Most (but not all) Amazon stores feature Start Chatting buttons;
click the button to launch the Java Chat applet and start chatting with
other members of this chat room. It’s a great way to discuss specific products or
categories with like-minded shoppers

Discussion Boards

Chatting’s nice, but it doesn’t let you communicate with everyone you might like
to reach. A better way of communicating with other Amazon users is through the
site’s discussion boards. You can use Amazon’s discussion boards to share comments
about products or categories, or about the Amazon site in general.

IP Address (Internet Protocol Address): This number is an exclusive number all information technology devices (printers, routers, modems, et al) use which identifies and allows them the ability to communicate with each other on a computer network. There is a standard of communication which is called an Internet Protocol standard (IP). In laymans terms it is the same as your home address. In order for you to receive snail mail at home the sending party must have your correct mailing address (IP address) in your town (network) or you do not receive bills, pizza coupons or your tax refund. The same is true for all equipment on the internet. Without this specific address, information cannot be received. IP addresses may either be assigned permanently for an Email server/Business server or a permanent home resident or temporarily, from a pool of available addresses (first come first serve) from your Internet Service Provider. A permanent number may not be available in all areas and may cost extra so be sure to ask your ISP.

Domain Name Server (DNS): This allows the IP address to be translated to words. It is much easier for us to remember a word than a series of numbers. The same is true for email addresses.

For example, it is much easier for you to remember a web address name such as whatismyip.com than it is to remember 192.168.1.1 or in the case of email it is much easier to remember anonymous@whatismyip.com than anonymous@192.168.1.1

Dynamic IP Address: An IP address that is not static and could change at any time. This IP address is issued to you from a pool of IP addresses allocated by your ISP or DHCP Server. This is for a large number of customers that do not require the same IP Address all the time for a variety of reasons. Your computer will automatically get this number as it logs on to the network and saves you the trouble of having to know details regarding the specific network configurations. This number can be assigned to anyone using a dial-up connection, Wireless and High Speed Internet connections. If you need to run your own email server or web server, it would be best to have a static IP.

Static IP Address: An IP address that is fixed and never changes. This is in contrast to a dynamic IP address which may change at any time. Most ISP's a single static IP or a block of static IP's for a few extra bucks a month.

IP version 4: Currently used by most network devices. However, with more and more computers accessing the internet, IPv4 addresses are running out quickly. Just like in a city, addresses have to be created for new neighborhoods but, if your neighborhood gets too large, you will have to come up with an entire new pool of addresses. IPv4 is limited to 4,294,967,296 addresses.

IP version 5: This is an experimental protocol for UNIX based systems. In keeping with standard UNIX (a computer Operating System) release conventions, all odd-numbered versions are considered experimental. It was never intended to be used by the general public.

IP version 6: The replacement for the aging IPv4. The estimated number of unique addresses for IPv6 is 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 or 2^128.

The old and current standard of addresses was this: 192.168.100.100 the new way can be written different ways but means the same and are all valid:

Torrent Client Configuration
In order to apply these tips you need to know your maximum
up- and download speed. You can test your bandwidth over
here (stop all download activity while testing). Also make
sure that you applied the tips provided in our previous posts.
Note that there’s a huge difference between kb/s
(kilobits/second) and kB/s (kilobytes/second). To be
precise, kB/s = kb/s divided by 8. In this tutorial we use
kB/s (like most torrent clients do). This means that you
might need to calculate your max speed in kB/s yourself if
the speedtest only gives you the results in kb\s (so divide by
8 then).

Settings 1-4 can be found in the options, settings or
preference tab of most torrent clients.

1. Maximum upload speed
Probably the most important setting there is. Your
connection is (sort of) like a pipeline, if you use you
maximum upload speed there’s not enough space left for the
files you are downloading. So you have to cap your upload
speed. Use the following formula to determine your optimal
upload speed…
80% of your maximum upload speed
So, if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal
upload rate is 32kB/s
But keep seeding!

2. Maximum download speed
Although setting your maximum download speed to
unlimited may sound interesting, in reality it will only hurt
your connection. If you still want to be able to browse
properly, set your maximum download speed to:
95% of your maximum download speed
so if your maximum download speed is 400 kB/s, the
optimal download speed is 380kB/s

3. Maximum connected peers per torrent
Yet another setting that you don’t want to max out. I
experimented quite a lot with the max connected peers
settings and came to the conclusion that both high and low
number hurt the download speed of a torrent. The following
setting worked best for me.
upload speed * 1.3
so, if your maximum upload speed is 40 kB/s, the optimal
amount of connected peers per torrent is
40 * 1.3 = 52
I didn’t noticed a difference for fast or slow connections here.

4. Maximum upload slots
1 + (upload speed / 6)
So, if your maximum upload speed is 30 kB/s, the optimal
number of upload slots is
1 + (30 / 6) = 6

5. More tips

A. Seed.
Downloading speeds will be sub-optimal for everyone unless
everyone plays their part and seeds. Private tracker sites are
a great example of how the overall speed of the swarm
increases when everyone is seeding and downloading in
equal measure. So, play your part in seeding and tell others
to as well.

B. Be connectable.
Make sure you’re not “firewalled” by opening up your
incoming ports or by enabling UPnP in your router,
otherwise you’ll be leaving bandwidth on the table.

C. Select the right torrents.
Your download will be faster if you choose to download a
torrent where there is a good balance of seeds and peers. For
instance, Vuze ranks its search results according to the
number of seeds and peers to make this easier.

D. Be realistic.
Check the swarm average and if you’re already above
average, then you just need to be patient. If you’re below
average, go back and check some of these other things I’ve
mentioned.

As the current hour/minute/second system is already widely adopted, it is very unlikely that the Internet Time system will be able to replace it, even on the Internet. There is already a common time system without time zones and daylight saving time in wide use today - UTC, which should be used instead.

Torrents are great, they are the best way to share large files with your friends, or even with people you don’t know at all. But surprisingly enough, not many people create torrents when they need to share something. I have “a lot of” friends who know how to download torrents, but when they need to send me their latest 200MB vacation picture collection, they ask me to “get on msn”.

It’s not that I have anything against msn (allthough the file transfer sucks), but why don’t just use BitTorrent? Especially if you want to send something to more than one person, or if you want to share high quality HDTV files, because then you can share the bandwidth.
So how do you do this? Well it’s very simple. Open your favorite BitTorrent client and do the magic trick:

file > create torrent

That’s all? Well almost. All you need to do now is put in the tracker info nad tick some boxes. This can differ somewhat from client to client but it all comes down to the same thing.

1. File > Create new Torrent (or CTRL + N)
2. Select the files and or directories
3. Trackers: This is probably the hard part for most people. But it’s pretty easy, just put in one of the
